Mealtime Monday: Beet, Fake Meat, Buckwheat


On the second floor of a grimy Bratislava strip mall there is a secret vegetarian haven.  Unlike my “vegetarian” perogies con carne in Poland, this cafeteria-style restaurant dished up actual meatless dishes that looked suspiciously (pleasantly?) like the real thing.  With a beet salad, lots of buckwheat (love!) and a chewy, doughy dessert topped with ground almonds I left full of yummy, rhyming Slovakian fare.

Since I was too short to see over the cafeteria counter I let the staff at City Restaurant in Bratislava select these dishes for me.  It’s located at Obchodná 58.
